Chithirai Festival - 19th April to 05th May 2026
The Chithirai Festival is one of the biggest festivals in Madurai. It goes on for around two weeks and represents a re-enactment of the wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar (Lord Shiva). The festival takes place on the 5th day of the Tamil month Chithirai (April). The Chithirai Festival takes place at the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai. There are also beautiful parades organized in the streets around the temple.
According to Legend, Lord Kallazhaga (Lord Vishnu), brother of Goddess Meenakshi, came mounted on a golden horse to Madurai from Azhagar Kovil to participate in the celestial wedding of his sister. However, he misses the wedding as he arrived late. This made him furious. To pacify him, Meenakshi and Sundareshvara came to the Vaigai river. Aḻagar chose to give all the gifts that he carried to Meenakshi and Sundareshvara in a mandapa in the middle of the Vaigai river, and returned to Aḻagar Hill without entering Madurai. The whole festival revolves around this legend.
The celebrations begin with a flag hoisting ceremony, the most important celebrations happen towards the end of the festival. A chariot is decorated, which carries the two idols of the couple. It is then taken around in a procession accompanied by loud music and beats of drums. As the procession passes through the streets, devotees put forward offerings of flowers, coconuts, camphor and incense sticks. Fairs and trade exhibitions are also organized on this occasion. The festival attracts a massive crowd.
The festival is celebrated with immense excitement and the zeal of a real wedding. The celebrations spread out all over the city and the streets remain crowded with devotees. Many people from neighbouring cities and states come to witness this festival. The last five witness the coronation, the procession, the Celestial wedding of God and Goddess, the Procession of temple chariots and the Return of Lord Kallazhaga.
Starting with the flag hoisting of the Meenakshi Temple, The flag remains atop of the Meenakshi Temple until the conclusion of the Chithirai month, till celebrations go on.

April 27, 2026 : Meenakshi Dikvijayam
The Meenakshi Dikvijayam is a powerful and symbolic episode of the Chithirai Festival in Madurai, celebrated at the sacred Meenakshi Amman Temple. “Dikvijayam” means conquest of all directions, and this ritual commemorates Goddess Meenakshi’s victorious expedition across the eight directions of the world. During the festival, the Goddess is taken in a grand procession through the streets of Madurai, richly adorned and accompanied by traditional music and devotees. The ceremony highlights her valor and leadership before her eventual meeting and divine union with Lord Sundareswarar, making it one of the most dynamic and inspiring moments of the Chithirai celebrations.
April 28, 2026 : Meenakshi Thirukalyanam (Wedding)
The Meenakshi Thirukalyanam is the most celebrated and spiritually uplifting event of the Chithirai Festival in Madurai. Held at the magnificent Meenakshi Amman Temple, this sacred ceremony marks the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar (Lord Shiva). April 29, 2026 : Therottam (Chariot Festival)
The Therottam (Temple Car Festival) is one of the most spectacular highlights of the Chithirai Festival in Madurai. Held around the sacred streets of the Meenakshi Amman Temple, this grand procession features beautifully decorated wooden temple chariots carrying Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar. Thousands of devotees gather to pull the massive ther (chariot) with thick ropes, chanting prayers and seeking divine blessings. The rhythmic beats of traditional drums, vibrant decorations, and the sea of devotees create a deeply spiritual and festive atmosphere. April 30, 2026 : Kallazhagar Ethirsevai
The Kallazhagar Ethirsevai is one of the most anticipated and emotionally charged events of the Chithirai Festival in Madurai. This sacred ceremony marks the grand arrival of Lord Kallazhagar (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu) from Alagar Koyil to Madurai to attend the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi. Devotees gather in large numbers to receive and welcome the deity with immense devotion and celebration. May 1, 2026 : Kallazhagar Vaigai River Entry
The Kallazhagar Vaigai River Entry is one of the most dramatic and spiritually significant moments of the Chithirai Festival in Madurai. During this grand event, Lord Kallazhagar from Alagar Koyil makes his ceremonial entry into the sacred Vaigai River, mounted on a beautifully adorned palanquin. According to tradition, the Lord arrives to attend the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi but reaches after the ceremony has concluded, and this symbolic river entry marks his divine blessing to the devotees. Thousands gather along the riverbanks to witness the sacred moment, creating an atmosphere filled with devotion, chants, and celebration.
