The 72nd Nehru Trophy Boat Race is scheduled to be held on 22 August 2026, at Punnamada Lake, Alappuzha (Alleppey), Kerala. It is India's most famous snake boat race and one of Kerala's biggest cultural festivals, attracting thousands of spectators and tourists from around the world.

The Nehru Trophy Vallam Kali (Nehru Trophy Boat Race) is the most prestigious and celebrated traditional boat race in Kerala. The event which is held annually is regarded as the state's premier water festival, attracting thousands of spectators from India and abroad. More than a sporting competition, the race is a vibrant celebration of Kerala's rich cultural heritage, teamwork, discipline, and community spirit. The rhythmic sound of oars striking the water, accompanied by the energetic Vanchipattu (traditional boat songs), creates an unforgettable spectacle that has become an iconic symbol of Kerala.

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race began in 1952 after India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, visited Alappuzha and was captivated by the traditional snake boat race. Following the event, he donated a silver trophy, which became known as the Nehru Trophy. Since then, the race has grown into Kerala's premier Vallam Kali (boat race).

The highlight of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race is the thrilling competition of the Chundan Vallams, popularly known as Snake Boats. These magnificent boats, measuring approximately 100–120 feet in length, are among the longest traditional racing boats in the world. Each boat is powered by more than 100 skilled rowers, who paddle in perfect synchronization to the energetic rhythm of traditional Vanchipattu (boat songs). Representing Kerala's leading boat clubs, the teams showcase exceptional teamwork, endurance, and competitive spirit, creating an electrifying atmosphere as they race across the waters of Punnamada Lake in pursuit of the prestigious Nehru Trophy.

On race day, Punnamada Lake transforms into a massive festival venue filled with excitement and celebration. Thousands of spectators gather in specially constructed galleries, while many others watch from houseboats and country boats anchored along the racecourse. Colourful flags, traditional music, cultural performances, and enthusiastic cheering create an electrifying atmosphere. The synchronized rowing, the thunderous chants of the crews, and the splash of hundreds of oars make the event one of the most spectacular sporting festivals in India.

Over more than seven decades, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race has become a living symbol of Kerala's cultural identity. It beautifully combines history, tradition, sportsmanship, and community participation, preserving the timeless heritage of Vallam Kali while inspiring future generations.
