Pokkali Rice Farm Visit
Pizhala is a remote village not far from Fort Kochi. There is an ancient farmer community struggling to sustain a rare, organic cultivation of a special crop named Pokkali Rice. Pokkali is one of the oldest and only salt-tolerant varieties of rice that grows organically. In a stunning backwater setting, this tour gives an opportunity to understand one of the oldest known crops cultivated through a symbiotic farming tradition involving rice and prawn culture.
Itinerary
After a short scenic drive from Kochi, arrive at the beautiful Pizhala village. Pokkali paddy was issued a Geographical Indication Certificate by The Government of INDIA in 2009. This paddy is also called G.I. certified Paddy Crop of Kochi. This model farm is a blend of Paddy (Rice), Prawn, Fish, Crab cultivations alternatively in a fully organic way. No chemicals like fertilizers or insecticides are used in any stage of cultivation. Visit the Agri-Service market, walk through the village, visit a Pokkali farm, take a country boat ride through the beautiful backwaters, visit the interpretation centre followed by a traditional Kerala-style lunch with local fish delicacies.
