The Vijayanagara Empire, which stretched from the Arabian Sea to the Indian Ocean, left behind ruins that now cover an area of more than 26 square kilometers. The city was naturally fortified by the tempestuous Tungabhadra River to the north and by rocky granite ridges on the other three sides. However, it may not have been military strategy alone that led the god-conscious Vijayanagara kings to choose this dramatic landscape for their great imperial city.
