Champakulam Boat Race - 29 June 2026
Champakulam Moolam Boat Race is one of the oldest and most celebrated vallam kali (snake boat races) in Kerala. Held at Champakulam on the banks of the Pamba River in Alappuzha, the race marks the beginning of Kerala’s famous boat race season and is conducted on the Moolam day of the Malayalam month of Mithunam, usually falling in June or July.
The festival is closely associated with the installation of the idol at the Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Swamy Temple. According to local legend, the idol was ceremonially transported through the backwaters accompanied by a grand procession of boats, and the present-day race commemorates that historic journey.
The main attraction of the event is the spectacular Chundan Vallams, or snake boats, which glide through the waters with synchronized rowing by large teams of oarsmen. Traditional vanchipattu (boat songs), colorful parasols, decorated boats, and cultural performances add to the festive atmosphere. Thousands of spectators gather along the riverbanks to witness the thrilling competition and vibrant celebrations.
The Champakulam Boat Race beautifully reflects Kerala’s rich maritime traditions, community spirit, and cultural heritage. Beyond being a sporting event, it is a living tradition that continues to unite villages and preserve the historic legacy of Kerala’s backwater culture.
